Finding a new job is a job in itself and as such you need to have a structured action plan.
Getting prepared for the job search is crucial and there are some top tips to be found. Essentially you will need job search and networking collateral which will include your CV, LinkedIn profile and activity sheets to monitor your progress and your actions.
Whilst our Job Search Strategy Planning Chart also offers practical advice and checklists, the following activities should also be considered.
Job search strategies can be divided into four main categories
- Online activity and personal marketing
- Recruitment agency contacts
- Published opportunities
For each of these categories you will need to decide on how much time you spend each day/week and have a SMART goal attached to each one as well.
Using an Excel spreadsheet as your job activity log will help you monitor your progress and ensure that you do not miss any essential follow-ups and that you stay in touch with your contacts, recruiters and update your online marketing regularly.
Don’t be caught out whilst job searching by forgetting to follow-up, missing deadlines for application submissions or not preparing for meetings/interviews.
Keeping job folders current with research materials, relevant links and copies of your collateral will ensure that you are actively job seeking and prepared for the new role.
